Employment Skills for Social Work (ESSW)

Employment Skills for Social Work (ESSW) is a free pre-employment training program that prepares participants for entry-level careers in the non-profit and community services sector

Choose from two training streams:

• Community & Peer Support: Build skills for peer support, shelter services, housing and community outreach.

• Food Security & Community Food Work: Prepare for roles in food banks, meal programs, food access and non-profit food services.

Participants receive industry-recognized certifications, including First Aid & CPR, Food Handler and Workplace Health & Safety, along with employment preparation, interview coaching and opportunities to connect with employers.

Program Commitment:

• 45+ hours over 4–6 weeks

• In-person, hands-on training

• Small cohort learning environment

Who Should Apply?

This program is ideal for individuals who:

• Are interested in social work, peer support, shelter services, housing, community outreach or food access

• Want to start a career in the non-profit or community services sector

• Have lived experience with homelessness, housing instability, mental health, substance use or addiction and are interested in supporting others

• Can commit to in-person training

• Are currently working 20 hours per week or less

• Are motivated to build skills, earn certifications and prepare for employment
